Measles in a Child Care Center

“I just want to share my recent measles experience. I own/operate a large child care center with about 75 kids under 5 yrs old. We have an enrolled child who turned 1 on 3/21, and got the MMR on 3/23 and then went on vacation on 3/25 out of state. That child was exposed to measles in the airport on 3/25. Came back to day care on 4/3, 4/4, 4/7 & 4/8.

On 4/8 we notified the parents that was wasn’t her bubbly self. Later that evening she developed a rash and went to the ER. Doctors were very hesitant to diagnose with measles even though they had received a call that day about the exposure via contact tracing.

We had to go through all the hoops of providing the name and contact info of every child in care to the health department and we were told to exclude the 4 children that were under 1 yr that had not received the vaccine yet + 1 toddler that mom opted out of all vaccines. Those 4 babies that were around the child that was diagnosed for a total of 4 days are all mobile and they all interacted together in the classroom. 3 1/2 WEEKS LATER, ALL THOSE UNVACCINATED BABIES ARE PERFECTLY FINE and cleared to return on Monday.

We had 1 other confirmed case that was a vaccinated toddler that ended up with the measles in a child care center of 75 kids.

The fear mongering that I have witnessed from the HD has been insane and drastically exaggerated. The 2 children with confirmed measles were sick for a couple days with a mild fever and a mild rash.

Now, we often get Hand, Foot & Mouth as well as Pink Eye in the center 1-2x per year. Those 2 will totally hit every child in the classroom and easily 60% of the entire center. And along comes measles, the “deadliest disease ever”, and 1 child gets it.”
